DEPARTMENT OF ORAL PATHOLOGY & MICROBIOLOGY
Department Description

Oral Pathology is a foundation subject on which the science of dentistry stands, the link and confluence between basic sciences and clinical dentistry. The Department of Oral Pathology is a specialty that is undertaken by laboratory-based dentists.

The Department of Oral Pathology at SVDC was established in 2014, one of the first department formed since the inception of the college. The Department is situated in the third floor of the college and spread over an area of 6000 sq.ft comprising of faculty rooms, students lab and clinical lab.

The Department is equipped with a 100 seating capacity lab for undergraduate students, 50 student’s microscopes, slide projection system, over 100 high quality teaching slides, imported study models, study centre and collection of over 50 reference books.

The faculty is vastly experienced in training students.

The Department is concerned with the assessment and diagnosis of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions by microscopic study of the affected tissue. The oral pathologists also handle responsibilities in forensic odontology.

The clinical pathology lab is equipped with 2 dental chairs for patient examination, histopathology lab for tissue processing, collection of over 90 patient case slides and tissue samples.

Objectives
  1. The department aims to impart fundamental knowledge of Oral Pathology to the  students so as to enable them become successful clinicians.
  1. To provide tissue diagnostic services to the clinical departments and also to the  outside community.
  1. The department will strive to promulgate awareness on oral diseases to fellow     professionals, medical colleagues and to the general public
  1. To promote research culture among students and to act as a central lab for research  within the institution.
  1. To employ different pedagogical methods so as to make the academic process more  appealing and interesting to the students

SERVICES / TREATMENT OFFERED:

Assessment and diagnosis of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions by microscopic study of the affected tissue. The laboratory provides oral diagnostic histopathology (biopsy/cytology) services with histopathologic analysis of the submitted biopsy specimens.

SKILLS IMPARTED TO STUDENTS:

I BDS (Oral Histology & Tooth Morphology):
  • The students will be trained to identify the different types of teeth based on their morphology, age estimation based on plaster models, carve individual teeth in wax with accuracy to their original tooth
  • Students will be exposed to identify the normal orofacial tissues under a microscope and appreciate the various structures seen at the microscopic level.
  • Students will be able to efficiently communicate physiological development, morphology, structure and functions of teeth and oral  & paraoral  tissues & its
